Wetlands: State Builds Enforcement Team's Strength

The state DEQ has added four new full-time inspectors to its 30-person enforcement team this winter using funds from a federal grant. While they still believe they could use more, they hope the added staff will send a message to developers that, despite the state's financial constraints, somebody is watching. Wetlands regulations and permits are designed to stop the destruction of a valuable environmental resource. When wetlands disappear, they take with them habitats for wildlife, flood protection for humans and a water-quality buffer.
